During class on Monday, we began to read teh play "Novio Boy" by Gary Soto. We have already read a short story, and two poems by Gary Soto. What are you beginning to notice about Gary Soto and his writing?
One thing that I am noticing with Gary Soto's writing is that he seems to use the last name Torres in his writing alot. The friend in "Seventh Grade" is named Michael Torres and the bully that sees Alex on his date is named Frankie Torres.
When I was reading his work, i noticed that his stories are mostly about love and poverty. The similarities about his writing is that the boy is shy to ask this girl out. That is mostly the main plot. Afterwards, he is able to ask her out. But in order to ask the girl out, he needs help of a friend. I think it is because the boy is poor and the girl is middle classed. Any responses? =)
well i notice that gary sotos writing is like if someone was really saying it. when i read the book it was writin as if i would really say it.( EXCEPT FOR THE SPANISH PART)
I NOTICED IN GARY SOTO'S WRITING HE LIKES TO PUT TWO DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES ABOUT 1 SUBJECT. IN THE FIRST 2 SCENES HE DID BOY'S PERSPECTIVES AND GIRL'S PERSPECTIVES. ALSO IN BOTH OF THE SCENES THEY TALK ABOUT THE SAME CHARACTERS.
I have noticed that Gary Soto has been following his themes and I have read about kids like me or older teens. I think that Gary Soto's work is trying to catch the eye of many teens/kids his poems are brilliant to other people kind of like adults but not me I just like his stories and plays.
WHAT I SEE WHEN I READ ABOUT GARY SOTO IS THAT HE WRITE ABOUT KIDS AND THERE PROBLEMS LIKE GIRLS DATES AND WHAT KIDS DO THIS DAYS AND I ALSO SEE WHAT MISS GRAHAM NOTICE THAT GARY USES THE LAST NAME TORRES A LOT THAT IS WHAT I SEE WHEN I READ BOOKS ABOUT GARY SOTO.
Chris I agree with you that there are many different perspectives but then I can't see both points of views in his other books. I saw the two perspectives in Novio Boy scene though.
*what i'm begnning to notice about Gary Soto and his writing is that he likes to keep his writing his culture. what mean is that he likes to know that other people know hes mexican-american.
A couple things I notice was that he wrote alot about love. I also noticed that he wrote about friendship, family, and friends I seem to think those are his themes which they are. I also noticed that he gets his idea's from memorys. these are what I noticed about Gary Soto.
WHAT I'M BEGINNING TO NOTICE ABOUT GARY SOTO'S WRITING IS THAT IN ALL OF HIS WRITING I THINK THAT HE TELLS WHAT THE PEOPLE AROUND HIM IS SAYING. HE DOESN'T MAKE IT SEEM AS IF THEY ARE SAYING IT ON THERE OWN. ALSO, I THINK THAT MOST OF THE THINGS HE SPEAKS ABOUT IN HIS BOOK HAS TO DO WITH THINGS THAT HAS HAPPENED IN HIS PAST TIME,MORE LIKE IN HIS TEENAGE YEARS.
I teach Humanities in Academy Three. Our goal is to support our students learning holistically, mind, body, and soul. In Academy Three we are focusing on literacy and this blog is one way that I will be able to monitor my students progress as we explore the author and genre studies throughout the year.

Anthony, do you mean that most of his writing is like direct quote stuff? Like people are saying it directly and they have least narration.
